Log held between two red spiked feed rollers at the infeed of a chipper canter
The Möhringer AUTOCHIPPER line chips and saws logs of 2 to 14 m and 100 to 650 mm diameter. Each log is scanned on entry, and the chipper heads and saws set themselves to the cutting program for the highest yield.

Each log is scanned as it enters the line. The chipper heads and saws are positioned automatically by a digital, hydraulically driven setting system to cut the timber to a pre-programmed cutting program. The cant is recycled through the roundabout for a second pass, with the settings for that pass stored and set automatically.
Where chip quality matters most, the chipper heads can be fitted with inner finishing knives that produce chips instead of the sawdust a circular finishing saw creates. For long timber, the canter can step outward to follow the natural taper of the log, and a flying crosscut synchronised with the log keeps board lengths manageable without interrupting production.
The standard line has a twin, double-arbour circular saw behind the canter with an automatic roundabout. Twin or quad bandsaws can replace the circular saw where minimal kerf is required, and a second canter can replace the roundabout to make the finished product in a single pass.
For smaller logs of 100 to 400 mm, profiling with four or eight profiling units cuts the board contour into the log at full feed and omits the conventional edger. One or two side boards can be produced per side of the log, depending on the optimisation.
The line is set up for the product mix and annual log volume of each sawmill.

Logs of 2–14 m are scanned in 2D or 3D and cut to the product sizes entered in the PC, up to 60,000 m³ in a carousel layout.

Large-diameter, short logs are cut into pallet boards, with 60,000–300,000 m³ of logs per year in a carousel or lines in series.

Four or eight profiling units cut the board contour into 100–400 mm logs, with no conventional edger.

Inner finishing knives on the chipper heads produce chips instead of sawdust.
