Stone Impact Test Stand

Hegewald & Peschke Stone Impact Tester

Stone and multi impact tests on coatings, plastics, composites, textiles and vehicle parts

The Stone Impact Tester from Hegewald & Peschke fires 4-5 mm projectiles with compressed air at up to 140 km/h to test how coatings, paints, plastics and vehicle parts resist stone impact.

Overview

Defined impacts from a fully enclosed stand

The stone impact tester determines the impact behaviour of materials and components, such as single-layer or multi-layer coatings, paints, plastic composites, textiles and vehicle parts. Small projectiles are shot at the specimen with compressed air.

It is used for objects exposed to stone impact, such as radiators, bonnets, wheel rims, windscreens, traffic signs, roofing materials, windows, plastics and composite materials. The stand is fully enclosed so that bullets and splinters cannot escape.

The projectile speed is set by the pressure and checked with a velocity meter, which allows defined impact testing beyond conventional grit testers and beyond the requirements of ASTM D 3170 and DIN EN ISO 20567-1.

Test setup

Barrel, velocity meter and positioning

Bullet velocity meter display and specimen magazine at the barrel

Velocity meter and magazine

Velocity meter at the barrel for setting the speed by pressure; magazine for up to 40 bullets.

Interchangeable barrel

Barrel slightly larger than the bullets, fed by a quick-opening valve from a pressure vessel.

Specimen positioning

Inclination around 1 or 2 axes, positions read from scales, distance 150 to >600 mm.

Enclosure and safety

Closed on all sides, plywood rear panels, door monitoring blocks firing when open.

Applications

What the stone impact tester tests

Shooting device with compressed air reservoir aimed at an inclined vehicle radiator

Vehicle radiators

Stone impact tests on radiators set at a defined angle.

Shooting device aimed at an alloy wheel rim

Wheel rims

Impact resistance of rim surfaces and coatings.

Orange painted engine bonnet clamped in front of the shooting device

Engine bonnets

Stone chip behaviour of painted body parts.

Transparent Plexiglas pane mounted in front of the shooting device

Plexiglas panes

Multi impact tests on transparent panes.

Red technical textile sample in a frame in front of the barrel and velocity meter

Hail-resistant textiles

Multi impact tests on technical textiles, e.g. for awnings.

Features

Shooting device and safety

Shooting device

  • Interchangeable barrel system for 4-5 mm projectiles.
  • Bullet velocity up to 140 km/h, checked with the included velocity meter.
  • Compressed air reservoir for constant conditions over a test series.
  • Laser pointer for aiming; geometrically exact bullets can reduce scatter.

Specimen and positioning

  • Shooting device positioned freely from outside and fixed by pneumatic clamping.
  • Specimen inclination freely adjustable around 1 or 2 axes.
  • Positions read reproducibly from scales.
  • Max. specimen 1000 x 900 x 300 mm, larger on request.

Safety and data

  • Fully enclosed stand with exchangeable plywood panels.
  • Doors monitored by pneumatic limit switches.
  • No additional software; records shot, speed and target position.
  • Machine approx. 1400 x 1400 x 2490 mm.
Benefits

Why use this test stand

Real stone impact. Simulates real stone impact damage on products and materials.
Material comparison. Evaluates the resistance of coatings, paints, plastics, composites and textiles.
Safe operation. The fully enclosed design keeps bullets and splinters inside.
Repeatable impacts. Stable air supply and velocity measurement give defined impact speeds.
Large components. Adjustable positioning suits different and large parts.
More control. Gives more controlled impact evaluation than conventional grit testers.
