Weld Joint Milling

PEMA LM, CM and EB Milling Machines

Longitudinal (LM), circumferential (CM) and edge beveling (EB) milling

PEMA LM, CM and EB machines mill weld joints for longitudinal and circumferential seams and plate edges. A milled semi-narrow groove cuts groove volume and welding time, and automatic depth control keeps the groove constant.

Overview

Milled grooves instead of thermal-cut bevels

Pemamek's milling machines prepare weld joints for circumferential and longitudinal welds. A milled semi-narrow groove reduces groove volume and total welding time, and deformation and stress in the part are lower. Automatic depth control keeps the groove constant.

In wind tower manufacturing, the outside is milled slightly past the completed inside weld to open the root, so back gouging is not needed. Only the inside bevel is oxy-cut, outside milling reduces defects, and the semi-narrow groove means less weld metal.

PEMA LM mills longitudinal seams, with integrated rollers to rotate the workpiece and milling of satellites in the same process. PEMA CM prepares circular seams and opens the root with a milling depth up to 140 mm. PEMA EB mills plate edges, with plate edge scanning to align the milling path.

Applications

Joint preparation tasks

The three machines cover the main joint preparation steps in heavy tubular fabrication.

Semi-narrow grooves

A milled groove with less volume, so less welding is needed to fill it.

Replacing thermal-cut bevels

Avoids oxy-cutting both bevels, welding both sides and arc gouging between welds.

Longitudinal seams

PEMA LM mills the longitudinal joint while integrated rollers turn the workpiece.

Circumferential root opening

PEMA CM mills the outside past the inside weld to open the root, with no back gouging.

Plate edge beveling

PEMA EB mills plate edges, with edge scanning to align the milling path.

Benefits

What milling brings

Less groove volume and shorter total welding time
Lower deformation and stress in the welded part
Fewer defects thanks to outside milling
Only the inside bevel needs oxy-cutting, and back gouging is avoided
Constant groove geometry with automatic depth control
