Conditional backwash
Base control on measured expansion and turbidity.
FilterSmart from Badger Meter (ATi) measures media level, bed expansion and backwash turbidity in granular media filters, so backwash can be controlled by actual filter conditions instead of flow and time alone.

FilterSmart is an application-specific version of the EchoSmart ultrasonic analyzer. A submerged piezoelectric sensor sends a sound wave through the water above the media; from the echo time it calculates media level and expansion in engineering units and as a percentage of the expandable media.
Sensors with an integrated scattered-light turbidity meter also measure backwash turbidity from 0.0 to 50.0 NTU. One controller programmes and monitors up to 16 sensors in a wired or wireless network, with no software integration needed.
